A história do jogo é a mesma do jogo de arcade Donkey Kong Jr. Mario trancou Donkey Kong em uma gaiola e, jogando como seu filho, o jogador tem que sair e salvá-lo. DK Jr. tem que se esquivar de Snapjaws pulando e agarrando as vinhas enquanto sobe no palco. Ao chegar ao topo, o jogador deve cronometrar seu salto para agarrar a chave que está balançando na videira. O nível será reiniciado com parte da gaiola de Donkey Kong removida. Depois de coletar a chave quatro vezes, DK fica livre e uma pontuação bônus é recebida.
