É o terceiro jogo da série Gradius. O jogo foi portado para o Super Nintendo Entertainment System no Japão em 1990 e na América do Norte em 1991, e serviu como título de lançamento para o sistema na América do Norte. A versão arcade nunca veria a luz do dia no Ocidente até ser incluída junto com Gradius IV em uma compilação dois em um para o PlayStation 2 e na Coleção Gradius para o PlayStation Portable.
